Grant King

Grant King is recognized as one of the greatest designers and mechanics at the Indianapolis 500. Grant's genius was evident early, as his cars were competitive at the old Langford Speedway. By age 14, he could strip an engine clean, rebuild it and put it back into a winning car before you could say "Mario Andretti." Grant's remarkable local success eventually had him looking to the big leagues and by age 30 he left Victoria and the Western Speedway for Indianapolis - the Mecca of racing. Here he carved a famous career building winning cars for Mario Andretti, Art Pollard, Billy Foster and Al Unser. As one of the few independents, operating in big time auto racing without a major sponsor, Grant King was unique. He was one of the best in Gasoline Alley where few mechanics could say that they also owned their own racecars. Grant could and as owner-designer-mechanic at the Indianapolis 500 he had a fourth-place finish with Steve Kristloff behind the wheel in 1973 and a third-place finish with Tom Sneva driving in 1974.

Bob Reid

Bob Reid was a tremendous "behind-the-scenes" force in Victoria junior hockey and lacrosse. Bob, along with Doug Anderson and Bill Ferguson, went door-to-door selling shares that created the junior hockey Victoria Cougars in 1967, a franchise that went from the BCHL to the WHL and produced numerous NHL players. Bob had a long history with hockey. Not only did he play in the old Victoria Commercial League in the 1940s and 1950s, he also coached and refereed at all levels and became president of the Victoria Minor Hockey Association. As well, Bob had a great love for lacrosse. He was instrumental in resurrecting Junior lacrosse in Victoria and during his decade as general-manager of the Victoria McDonalds, he built a lacrosse dynasty that culminated with one of the greatest junior lacrosse teams ever assembled. They won the 1976 Minto Cup. In 1983, under the Esquimalt Legion team name, they repeated with a second national title. Bob's greatest achievement, however, in both hockey and lacrosse was in showing enough simple concern to want to turn out well-rounded young people.
