Simon Whitfield – Athlete – Triathlon

After moving to Victoria in 1997, Simon won bronze at the 1999 Pan American Games and gold in the first-ever Olympic triathlon in 2000 in Sydney. He went on to win 7 World Cups, 20 national titles including 10 consecutive National Championships, gold at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and a further Olympic silver medal in Beijing in 2008. He is one of only a few athletes who competed in four consecutive Olympic Games and carried the Canadian flag in the closing ceremonies in 2000 and the opening ceremonies in 2012.

Simon Keith – Athlete – Soccer

Simon grew up playing soccer in Victoria but at age 21, in mid-career with the UVic Vikes and under consideration for the 1986 World Cup team, he underwent a lifesaving heart transplant. He made a remarkable comeback to play again in the NCAA for UNLV, where his standout performance made him first overall draft pick in the Major Indoor Soccer League and led to a professional career with the Cleveland Crunch, Victoria Vistas, Winnipeg Fury, and Montreal Supra. His inspirational story has made headlines around the world. Now devoting his efforts to organ donor programs, Simon is one of the world’s longest-lived heart recipients.

Kent Manderville – Athlete – Ice Hockey

Kent moved to Victoria at age 9 and played in the Oak Bay, Saanich and Racquet Club Minor Hockey Leagues from 1980 to 1987. He was a member of three national teams: the World Junior Championships gold medal teams of 1990 and 1991 and the 1992 Olympic silver medal team. From 1991-2003 he played 2 seasons in the AHL and 11 seasons in the NHL, including 69 appearances in seven playoff series and finished his professional career with four further years in the Finnish professional league.

Gerald Kazanowski – Athlete – Basketball

A UVic Vike from 1980 through 1983, and a pro player for nine further years, Gerald was a member of four consecutive CIAU championship teams, a three-time CIAU All-Canadian and a two-time recipient of the Premier’s Athletic Award. He played in three World University Games, three FIBA World Championships, and participated against the original “dream team” at the 1992 FIBA Tournament of the Americas. He was also on the national team at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics.

Nancy Mollenhauer – Athlete – Field Hockey

A member of the Canadian Women’s National Field Hockey dynasty team of the eighties, Nancy Mollenhauer was an integral part Canada’s ongoing international success. She competed in two Olympic Games (1984 and 1988), two World Cups (1983 and 1986), and at the 1987 Pan-American Games at which she was named Canada’s flag bearer.  Nancy won a silver and bronze medal at the 1983 and 1986 World Cups respectively.

 Mike Spracklen – Coach – Rowing

In his first four-year tenure as Head Coach of the National Men’s Rowing Program, Mike’s rowers earned medals for Canada at four World Championships and two Olympic Games. In 2000, he returned to Elk Lake where, over the next 12 years, he produced a further eight World Champion boats and four Olympic medal winners and was named the International Rowing Federation’s “Coach of the Year” in 2002.

Randy Bennett (deceased) – Coach – Swimming

Randy moved to Victoria in 2003 and was Island Swimming’s Head Coach until his untimely death at age 51 in 2015. By 2008, he had developed the Swimming Canada High Performance Centre in Victoria, and produced the only Canadian medal in swimming in 2008 in Beijing. From 2009 til his death, he was Canadian National Head Coach and his program was responsible for seven of 11 medals across the 2012 Olympic Games, two Commonwealth Games and three World Championships. Among his many awards are eight Petro Canada Coaching Excellence Awards, six times Swim BC Coach of the Year, and Swimming Canada Coach of the Year for five consecutive years 2008 – 2012. He received the Governor General’s Award in 2012.

Bob Moffatt – Builder

A native Victorian, Bob was national junior champion while at Old Victoria Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club before going on to a distinguished career in sport administration, finishing with 16 years as President & CEO of Tennis Canada. He retired to Victoria in 2004 and was recruited to help develop the concept and raise the funds for the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (PISE). He then became the first General Manager and Acting CEO from 2008 to 2010 and was responsible for guiding PISE from vision to reality. As such, he was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the future development of high performance sport in Victoria.

John & Marilyn Bate – Builders

For over 50 years, by virtue of John’s positions in facilities management and ultimately as the City of Victoria’s Director of Recreation, the Bates have been part of virtually every world-class provincial, national and international event held in Victoria including lacrosse, hockey, soccer, baseball, figure skating, curling and more. John’s and Marilyn’s combined efforts have touched literally thousands of Greater Victorians and they have been honoured with many, many awards over the years. They continue to volunteer with a variety of events and support young athletes through the scholarships they sponsor at the University of Victoria.
